RoboCop (2014)

The RoboCop reboot directed by José Padilha was the second project I worked on at Framestore.

My work on the film began with the look development of the ED-209s and the creation of the all-new EM-208s.

For those who may not be familiar with the original RoboCop film, ED-209s are massive, heavily-armed robots that serve as police enforcers in the film’s dystopian future. For the reboot, we wanted to give the ED-209s a more formidable spin, while still keeping the iconic look of the original.

For the EM-208s I had to closely match a non-moving, practical version of the robot that had been constructed by the art department.

As a shot lighting artist, my primary focus was on two of the film’s key sequences. The first was the opening sequence in Tehran, where the EM-208s and ED-209s are shown policing the city streets.

The second sequence I worked on was the film’s destructive final battle, which took place between RoboCop and multiple full CG ED-209s.
