Spider-Man: Far from Home

In “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” Peter attempts to break free from his superhero duties and experience life as a typical teenager. During a school excursion to Europe, he encounters the charming Quentin Beck, also known as Mysterio, who is a fellow superhero portrayed by Jake Gyllenhaal. However, things are not as they appear to be.

Framestore took on the dazzling ‘Illusion Battle,’ a mesmerizing sequence where Mysterio uses his powers to create psychedelic environments, freakish characters, and a dramatic narrative that plays on Peter’s very worst fears. The scene presented an intriguing and complex creative challenge, with Framestore collaborating with Marvel to develop both the visual and narrative aspects of the sequence.

This was my first role as Lighting Lead on a film. Aside from learning the ropes of managing a team of lookdev and lighting artists I was also in charge of the lookdev of Stealth Spider-Man, Mysterio and a personal favourite of mine – Zombie Iron Man.

The lighting of the sequence presented numerous challenges for both my team and me, as we had to devise clever strategies to accommodate the supernatural elements of the story. The culmination of which was the depiction of the crumbling destruction of three different environments, each with its own lighting scheme that seamlessly transitioned around Spider-Man.
