As a newly employed lighting artist at Framestore, I couldn’t believe my luck when I was assigned to work on the epic film “Gravity”. It was my first time working on a feature film, and the thought of being part of such a monumental project was both exhilarating and nerve-wracking. I was determined to learn as much as possible and make a meaningful contribution to the team.
Initially, I was assigned to work in the techvis department, which involved translating previs animation onto industrial robots with gimbal rigs. This was a complex task that required a high level of precision and attention to detail. The use of robots allowed for more precise camera movements, which resulted in more realistic and dynamic camera shots. It was a fantastic opportunity to be at the forefront of technology in the film industry and to work on such an innovative project.

One of the highlights of my time on “Gravity” was the chance to visit the film set. Being part of such a large-scale production was an awe-inspiring experience. It was fascinating to see all the behind-the-scenes work that went into bringing the film to life.
After the filming was complete, I moved into the lookdev and lighting department. My initial focus was on the lookdev of some of the Russian modules that make up the International Space Station, and I later worked on the lighting of various shots. It was exciting to be able to contribute to the final look of the film and to see all the hard work pay off on the big screen.
Winning a Visual Effects Oscar for our work on “Gravity” was a crowning achievement for the team. It was a testament to the immense talent, creativity, and dedication of everyone involved. The technology used on this project was groundbreaking, and it was thrilling to be part of such an innovative and forward-thinking team.
