I was the lead lighting and lookdev artist at Framestore that worked on Netflix’s new teen series Lockwood & Co. This was my first episodic work.
For my second outing on a Doctor Strange film I was once again kept on my toes by the complications and peculiarities of the project.
Working on “The Midnight Sky” threw up a whole host of challenges, the foremost of which began a few weeks after I had started working on the film in the form of Coronavirus and the inevitable working from home situation. After a couple of weeks of fairly big adjustment to the new working practices we settled into the challenges of the project.
Framestore were tasked with handling several sequences in the movie “Dolittle”, featuring Robert Downey Jr. Our team was responsible for creating and animating various fantastical creatures and environments that would transport audiences into a magical world.
In “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” Peter attempts to break free from his superhero duties and experience life as a typical teenager. During a school excursion to Europe, he encounters the charming Quentin Beck, also known as Mysterio, who is a fellow superhero portrayed by Jake Gyllenhaal. However, things are not as they appear to be.
In the heartwarming live-action adventure Disney’s Christopher Robin, the young boy who embarked on countless adventures in the Hundred Acre Wood with his band of spirited and lovable stuffed animals has grown up and lost his way. His childhood friends, led by Pooh, venture into our world and help Christopher Robin (played by Ewan McGregor) remember the loving and playful boy still inside.
Iron Man has a whole new look in Infinity War. Iron Man’s Mark 50 ‘bleeding edge’ suit is a move away from his solid suit of previous films: rather than unfolding, it is made up of singular nanobots which move around his body to form a suit. The manifestation of the suit moving around the character needed to look both organic and mechanical, with new weapons forming from it.
Framestore was no stranger to building the ISS in CG, having done so in Gravity . This version was larger and very different in design to the real thing: around 1.5 kilometres long, compared to just over 100 metres.
Directed by New Zealand comic filmmaker Taika Waititi (What We Do In The Shadows, Hunt for the Wilderpeople), Framestore reunited with Marvel Studios to deliver the climactic final act of Thor: Ragnarok, producing 459 shots of heavy-duty VFX and a host of fully-CG characters.
As a member of the visual effects team for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” my primary focus was on the lighting of the film’s opening scene.
This opening scene features a memorable close-up shot of Baby Groot dancing to Electric Light Orchestra’s “Mr. Blue Sky” amidst a chaotic battle scene. As the camera zooms out, the audience is treated to a visual feast of exploding ships and creatures.
